Two Word Change to NAGPRA

Tuesday October 5, 2004
Senate bill S.2843 passed on Wednesday, September 29, 2004, slightly altering the wording of the United States Native American Graves and Repatriation Act, wording that might very well impact future repatriation court cases. The measure would alter the wording from

"Native American" means of, or relating to, a tribe, people, or culture that is indigenous to the United States
to
"Native American" means of, or relating to, a tribe, people, or culture that is or was indigenous to the United States

While this will not likely change the outcome of the Kennewick Man issue, which while under appeal has been judged, it may very well affect future legislative outcomes. http://www.indianz.com/News/2004/004562.asp
