A search for the lost continent of Atlantis includes a bathymetric investigation of an island in the right place, under the right circumstances--but at the wrong time.

(1) Richard Welch says:

Plato’s dating of the Atlantis story is obviously wrong, but that’s hardly surprising since the Egyptian priests, as Herodotus shows, greatly exaggerated historical time. The Atlantis legend has a fairly simple explanation: It was a supervolcanic island off Portugal that exploded and sank in the 17th century BC, leaving nothing but the vast caldera of the Tore seamount ca. 200 miles west of Lisbon (see Roots of Cataclysm, Algora Publ. NY 2009).
