There are a few stories in the press today concerning the findings of Ruth Shady at one of the sites of the recently discovered ancient civilization of Caral, found on the Pacific coast of Peru and dated about 4600 years ago. Apparently a quipu--the assemblage of knotted string believed to represent a form of writing--has been recovered at the site, indicating both the time depth of this form of communication, and that Caral is likely ancestral to the Inca State.
