As a teacher living in Ribe, who has written a lot of histories about the history to the homepage of Ribe’s hostel, I’ve noticed that he date you mention for the foundation of Ribe, Denmark is very wrong. The archaeologists have found many founds from the early 700. Many of which can be seen in Ribe Viking Museum. Nowhere else in Denmark you can see so many founds from the Viking Era as in Ribe. As you can see on our homepage Danhostel Ribe Family and Youth Hostel’s Viking photo page: http://www.danhostel-ribe.dk/main-page/photographs/vikings-in-ribe.html
Ribe will celebrate its 1300th anniversary in 2010. So no doubt that the town was founded at that time but it is true that the catholic monk Ansgar arrived in Denmark around year 826 and with cristianity came the first written things about Ribe. You can read about Ansgar here: http://www.danhostel-ribe.dk/main-page/stories-from-the-past/ribe-cathedral-the-church-of-our-lady.html
Best wishes Gudrun Rishede.
