This nicely gory story about an apparent mass murder recovered from the ruins of the Maya civilization post-classic capital Cancuén in Guatemala is making the rounds; this version in USA today has lots of additional info attached to the story, along with a drawing of a cenote. Apparently the cenote (a ritual water reservoir or cistern) had 'thousands of bones from dozens of bodies', and archaeologists Arthur Demarest, Sylvia Alvarado and Tomas Barientos believe the evidence of violent death suggests the chaos during the Maya 'collapse'.
