Was the Taung Baby Bird Food?

Thursday January 12, 2006
News story making the rounds today reports on paleoanthropologist Lee Berger's contention that the Taung Baby was the victim of an attack by an eagle. The Taung baby or Taung child is the name given to the skull of one of our hominin ancestors, Australopithecus africanus, discovered in 1924 by Raymond Dart. The Taung cranium had two holes in it, leading researchers to first believe it was a saber-toothed tiger that had caused the demise. Berger thinks the damage is the mark of an eagle, at least according to the news story.
