This article in the New York Times today discusses work by T.D. Price and others on a site in Mexico where evidence of African slaves--people born in West Africa and brought to the New World--has been found in a cemetery beneath the plaza at Campeche. Using strontium stable isotope analysis of teeth, Price's team was able to identify the birth place of the individuals as West Africa. The site is an old church and cemetery dated to the mid-16th century; and reported in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology.
