Images from the New Kingdom Tomb

Follow me on:

By now there are several images floating around on the Internet of the New Kingdom tomb reported by the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities on Friday. Here's what I've found so far:

Egypt Offers First Peek at Tomb (AP), which shows a workman at the entrance of the tomb
Pharaonic tomb find stuns Egypt (BBC), nice image of the entire excavation, and includes a video, 2 minute long video with Zahi Hawass and excavation director Edwin Brock
Valley of the Kings gives up another secret tomb (Daily Telegraph), nice color image of one of the mummy cases.
Discovery shows valley still has stories to tell, News Leader, has the same image from the BBC cover but larger
Egypt Offers First Peek at New Tombs, New York Radio, gives a nice interior shot of the tomb entry.

For anybody who hasn't caught this news story, a US/Egyptian team working feet from Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of the Kings reports that they have discovered a new tomb, including the mummies of five court officials from the New Kingdom. Archaeologists are very excited about this, although there isn't a pharaoh among them, or perhaps because there is only court officials, who have rarely been identified in the past.

Egyptologist Kent Weeks, quoted in this story in the Taipei Times, said "It's ironic. A century ago, people said the Valley of the Kings is exhausted, there's nothing left. Suddenly Carter found Tutankhamen. So then they said, Now there's nothing to find. Then we found KV5. Now we have KV63. I wouldn't be surprised if we discover more tombs in the next 10 years."
