The World Heritage site of Butrint, located in southwest Albania on the Mediterranean Sea, is a unique blend of Greek and Roman and Byzantine and Venetian architecture, a result of its long and checkered history, as revealed by archaeological excavations by the Albanian government and others since the mid-1950s. I wrote Butrint: City of Mosaics quite a while ago, but this month Archaeology magazine came out with an online feature on the recent excavations at Butrint by the Butrint Foundation called Ages of Albania, reminding me of this one, and nagging me to refurbish mine and find some new photographs.
The photos in my feature on Butrint, including this one of the Greek amphitheatre, were taken by Etrit Bardhi. Archaeology magazine's full feature will appear in the March/April 2006 issue.
