When I was in graduate school, and driving around in the American midwest planning my MA research with a fellow graduate student, we got stuck in the mud. I left the station wagon, to see if I could find a friendly farmer. My colleague dug us out of the mud with his trowel, never mussing the creases in his khaki trousers. I've never forgotten that moment, and so when archaeologist Chris Carleton approached me with a story about how he found a unique use for a trowel, I couldn't resist posting it.
