The Dutch archaeologist Machteld Mellink, who died in February 2006 at the age of 88, was an expert in Anatolian archaeology with a 40-year career teaching and practicing archaeology at Bryn Mawr College. She conducted archaeological investigations at the sites of Gordion and Troy, and is remembered as a passionate, vital woman who generously supported her students and colleagues.
Within this brief biography, Maureen Basedow, archaeologist at Miami University of Ohio, shares some of her memories as a student of Mellink, when support for women in the field of archaeology (and anyone else with a personal life) was hard to find.
