In the Harvard University Gazette yesterday was this story on archaeologist Jason Ur's research using satellite imagery to track water control in the ancient Near East. Ur believes he has found evidence that an extensive network of canals once lay around Nineveh, providing irrigation for a vast amount of agricultural fields. The piece has an image of the canals plotted around the ancient city, which were likely built by the Assyrians in the 7th or 8th centuries BC.
