Every spring, hordes of archaeologists and students of archaeology sharpen up their trowels and take to the agricultural fields and outskirts of cities, prepared to dedicate their summers to the investigation of proposed highway corridors, wastewater treatment plants, and cell towers. While this kind of archaeology might not have the glamor seen in the Indiana Jones movies, it is a way for college students to make a few bucks until school starts up again in September. The series called Have Trowel, Will Travel, described the life of a 'shovel bum', including how you get such a gig, what you might find the life to be like, and how to avoid the pitfalls.
