Continuing with our theme of archaeology of the world as seen through the currently-under-reconstruction World Atlas of Archaeology, today let's take a visit to South Africa's archaeology on the web. Several excellent websites have been assembled for South African archaeology, such as that for Blombos Cave and the Iziko Museums of Capetown, which has articles on several different sites of different time periods. I've also found and put together a few pictures of the Sterkfontein paleontological site, so ... enjoy! The photograph of a bronze bust is in front of the entranceway to the Sterkfontein paleontological site. The bust is of archaeologist Robert Broom contemplating Mrs. Ples, the first Australopithecine skull he found at Sterkfontein. The photo was taken by Thomas Sly on a recent visit to South Africa.
