Continuing on our tour of the world's archaeology (and I'm not going to promise it will be at this rate), today we're going to visit Albania, one of the Balkan states. Albania's history includes ownership by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans, and as a result, the old buildings (or what's left of them) have some of the most interesting architectural features you'll find in Europe.
The cool old building in the photograph is St. Mary's Orthodox church, perched high on the side of a hill inside a third century AD fortress and above the modern town of Berat; the photographer is
alwynt (Alwyn Thomson).
