When you first consider going into archaeology, you hear a lot of loose talk about the romance of the science. But I always tell people they should go experience it firsthand, before you commit to spending your life--or the next several years anyway--getting a degree and a job. This description of what archaeological survey is like in the rolling lands of the American midwest during July in August, when the corn is high and the humidity higher was written when I was actually in the field, and even today, I can remember the sweat rolling off my brows.
