The latest addition to the Living History Sites collection is St. Mary's City, a 17th century settlement in Maryland. A living history site is a place where the buildings of an old community or farmstead have been reconstructed. Tourists can walk the streets entertained by trained docents, dressed in period costume and acting as if they were inhabitants. A fairly recent book edited by John Jameson called The Reconstructed Past gives insight into the planning and problems of these curious attempts to visit to the past.
