Today, Sarah Ward of the Nautical Archaeology Society provides this description of their upcoming study tour on sailing ships of the Dutch East India Company (VOC).

Fieldschool in Focus: Nautical Archaeology Society International Exchange Program (Study Tour)

The Nautical Archaeology Society in conjunction with the LWAOW (Landelijke Werkgroep Archeologie Onder Water) is running an international exchange programme, following the Dutch East India Company (called Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie in Dutch and abbreviated VOC) trail in the Netherlands. The is the second in a pilot scheme of exchanges co-ordinated by the NAS in the UK.

The programme will take place in the Netherlands from the 20-27 May 2007 and will include a series of lectures on the history of the VOC and VOC shipbuilding practices. We will also visit the island of Texel, a visit to the Texel Maritime Museum, following the VOC trail on the island and will have two days diving various wrecks on Texel Roads. The group will also visit Lelystad, home of Batavia Wharf, the RACM (formerly NISA: the Netherlands Institute for Ship and Underwater Archaeology), and the Nieuwland Erfgoed Centrum Musuem, and complete the week by sailing on the Ijsselmeer, the former Zuiderzee, visiting harbours on the west side of the former inner-sea and enjoying a special VOC dinner.

This is an exciting opportunity to get involved in the second pilot exchange scheme. Individuals not currently Members of the Society are invited, as are those who have not currently undertaken any NAS training. Avocational, volunteer and terrestrial archaeologists are also encouraged to apply. Upon completion of the field school participants will receive training credit toward their NAS Part III certification and 'Online Only' Newsletter Membership of the NAS. Participants will also be invited to become involved in the reciprocal Dutch visit to the UK.

The cost (700 GBP) is comparable with other such programs, and the fee is all-inclusive. Other then the actual cost of travelling to and from the Netherlands, everything is included. All meals (breakfast, lunch & dinner), accommodation (which will be onboard a vessel for at least one night, hotels the other nights), internal travel, activities, excursions, museum visits, diving etc is covered. Spaces are limited to 12, and it is filling quickly, so please contact Sarah Ward (sarah@nasportsmouth.org.uk) at the NAS for more information. Registrations close the 30th March 2007.
