On March 9, 2007, Chicago's Field Museum will open up a major permanent exhibition of art objects and artifacts of the American continents.
Spanning the entire course of human history in the Americas as we understand it today, the Field's exhibit includes galleries set up not in chronological order, but rather around approaches to cultural change, such as hunting and gathering in dramatically different environments; the domestication of different plants and animals; the growth of complex societies and leadership; monument building; government formation; and the building of vast empires.
The exhibit includes more than 2,200 artifacts representing more than twenty cultural groups such as the Hopewell and Mississippian of the American midwest, the Taino of the Caribbean, the Zapotec, Maya, and Aztec of Mesoamerica; the Moche, Wari, and Inca of South America, and others. Displays are to include recreations, interactive maps, dioramas and animated videos. Public programs are available, including lectures, family workshops, daily gallery programs, student classes, and teacher workshops.
As a pre-exhibition treat, the Field Museum sent along a selection of twenty wonderful photographs of the Ancient Americas exhibition, including artifact photographs by John Weinstein and site photographs of several archaeological sites featured in the exhibition.
Admission to the new exhibition will be free with general admission to the Field (US $12 for adults, $7 for children 4-11, seniors and students with ID). Discounts for Chicago residents. Details at the Field Museum website.
