Balkan heritage (BH) has three new field school projects in Archaeology and Art History and one heritage workcamp in 2007, and BH officer Kostadin Kostov sent along descriptions of all four. The first is a cataloging project of the Late Neolithic pottery collection, to be held in the village of Malka Vereia.
Project type: field school (cataloging and documentation project and fieldtrips)
Site: The project involves the scientific cataloging of artifacts from the Late Neolithic settlement of Kaloyanovets (10 km from Stara Zagora). Kaloyanovets is the typesite for the Kaloyanovets culture, identified in the 1960s and later discovered at sites such as Tell Karanovo 4 and other sites throughout Upper Thracia region in Late Neolithic. Two later periods of occupation are found at Kaloyanovets in the Eastern and Western part of the site, which covers approximately 0.6-0.7 ha. Despite their importance, materials from the excavations at Kaloyanovets have never been published.
Period(s) of occupation: Balkan Late Neolithic (5300-5000 B.C.)
Description: The artifact collection from Kaloyanovets belongs to the Stara Zagora Regional History Museum and is now stored in the Museum's depot in the village of Malka Vereia. It originated from previously unpublished excavations conducted in 1960s. Over the last 40 years a lot of new sites have been found which are clearly the Kaloyanovets culture, but the type site has still not been published. Now, in a time of increasing discoveries, the scientific need for the artifacts' publishing is stronger than ever. The project task is to catalogue the entire collection, creating digital profiles of each item and and building a relevant typology of each ware. The catalogue will be created basically for the Museum's needs but statistical results, typologies and synchronizations with neighboring sites and cultures will be published in order to facilitate scholars dealing with the Balkan Late Neolithic. Participation in further publication may be negotiated according to participants' capacities and motivation. The only field school session available in 2007 includes 3 modules: fieldwork: inside in the Museum's depot and outside during the fieldtrips; educational course (lectures, workshops and trainings); and excursions.
