An international expedition to the ancient Egyptian site of Hierakonpolis is being featured in Archaeology magazine this month. Renée Friedman of the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, Egyptologist Jane Smythe, and botanist Ahmed Fahmy

are conducting ongoing research at a a large-scale food production site, perhaps a brewery, dated to predynastic times about 3600 BC.

The excavations at Hierakonpolis have been featured on Archaeology interactive dig feature for several years now, and the feature just gets better and better.
