An important Hopewell earthworks in south central Ohio called Spruce Hill goes on the auction block on June 14, 2007, too quickly for the Archaeological Conservancy or other organizations to find the funds to purchase this relatively pristine site. Organizers are hoping to collect that money before the 238 acres goes to development. Several nonprofit organizations are raising funds to try and buy the earthworks including the Archaeological Conservancy, Wilderness East, Ross County Park District and Appalachia Preserve System.
