One of the best known sets of archaeological ruins in the world, Machu Picchu has drawn millions of visitors, resulting in heaven only knows how many photographs squirreled away in tourist memory books.

And no wonder: the palatial residence was part of the personal estate of King Pachacuti (AD 1438-1471), one of the last great Inca kings, and it is perched in an impossible location high in the Andes Mountains.
