The New Seven Wonders

By , About.com GuideJuly 8, 2007

Follow me on:

The news is out today, that the new Seven Wonders of the World have been selected. Six of the seven are archaeological in nature, and I heartily agree with all of them, so I've put together a photo gallery of each of the six new sites and one of the Pyramids at Giza, the only remaining survivor of the last Seven. I admit it. I didn't include Christ the Redeemer, because all I know is what Bonnie writes: that it was a gift to the people of Brazil from France, built in the mid-1850s.

Christ the Redeemer my foot. In all due respect for the subject matter, but to give a concrete statue that sort of recognition over places such as Angkor Wat and the Taj is mind boggling. I’d say that this would show what happens when one has such an open vote, but you can not convince me that the Redeemer would get more votes among the general public than some of the other structures listed. Congrats to Brazil but I say we eliminate it, if anything it could be put on a separate listing of more modern structures – a much more appropriate area, and vote for the remaining six. After all, the site is voting for the wonders of nature now so why not restructure this? Start the campaigning folks!

I totally agree (and that was one of the reasons I couldn’t bring myself to add it to the photo gallery). Angkor Wat would have been so cool.

Of course, I didn’t vote…

More than a one-hit wonder, interesting article in the BBC News about popularity contests

Wow. The Taj did make it – my mistake, our local paper reported it didn’t. What the @#$% is this though? Seriously people, fight this!

From a historical archaeological perspective isn’t a monument just as archaeological as the other choices? The original seven included a colossus and a chryselephantine statue.

I’m not saying that the statue of Christ the Redeemer is one of the seven most wonderful things in the world, merely that it’s in keeping with the list.

…but any list without the Great Pyramid on it is hardly credible anyway.

I think what I’d like to do is add photos to this feature, of sites we think belong on the list, along with a paragraph or two about why it belongs there. So, anybody with a suggestion, leave a note. I’m thinking Stonehenge for the first addendum. If you want to write a justification for your site, drop me a line.
