If you're going to speak of mysterious Africa, you have to bring up the site of Timbuktu (also spelled Tombouctou or Timbuctoo).
The city has a fascinating history, ruled by several different West African groups including the Songhai Empire. As a result, the architecture is amazing, including three wonderful medieval Butabu mosques, like this one in the photograph, the Sankore Mosque, first built in the 15th century out of mud brick. But sadly, so far, the archaeology stinks.
