The Angkor Civilization (or Khmer Civilization) was an important society of southeast Asia, including all of the Mekong Delta in Cambodia, and big pieces of southeastern Thailand and southwestern Vietnam.

Its Early Kingdoms period is represented by the Funan culture site Oc Eo; while its classic period, dated roughly between 800 to 1300 AD, produced the spectacular temple complexes of Angkor Wat, Angkor Borei and Angkor Thom, among many others.

A new paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences published today reports on a map of the the capital city of the Angkor civilization, the settlement of Angkor. The map reveals that the occupation may cover an unheard of 3,000 square kilometers, making Angkor the largest low-density pre-industrial city on earth.

To read more about the new map and what it reveals about the Angkor civilization, see the article Angkor (Cambodia). The PNAS paper, written by members of the Greater Angkor Project, isn't yet available, but when it is, it will be here.
