Today's site of the day is Kerma, a kingdom and cultural group in the Sudanese Nubia, which grew out of the A-Group culture (or pre-Kerma) during the Egyptian Middle Kingdom (ca 2000-1600 BC). Kerma was one of the first African urban centers and part of the Kush Civilization, located in the Northern Dongola Reach of northern Sudan above the 3rd cataract of the Nile. Twice Kerma's rulers defeated Egypt, first as an ally of the Hyksos ushering in the Second Intermediate Period of Egypt, and again by themselves as part of the Third Intermediate Period.
