Lefkandi (Greece): Site of the Day

After the Minoan and Mycenaean cultures of the Mediterranean fell, the "Dark Ages" of Greek civilization lasted between about 1200 and 750 BC. During this period, there is little archaeological evidence of settlements at the sophisticated level of sites such as Knossos and Mycenae, with one prominent exception: Lefkandi.

The archaeological ruin of Lefkandi, located on the island of Euboae in Greece, dates to the Dark Ages. Artifacts and architecture at the site suggest to archaeologists that it was one of the sites occupied by the Mycenaeans after the fall of Knossos about 1200 BC.
