I have a thing for churches, and I don't think I'm alone in this amongst my archaeologist brethren.
Whether they are mosques or synagogues or temples, churches have a funny vibe to them that we can't quite put our finger on, whether they were erected to the greater glory of some higher power or dedicated to some religious figure here on earth. To me, they are a concrete reminder of the potential for human architectural excellence.
So, this week's photo gallery is of some of the more beautiful churches still standing in the world, including the one in this photograph, the jaw-droppingly beautiful Hagia Sofia, built in the 6th century AD by the Byzantine emperor Justinian and still almost exactly as it was built despite its nearly 1500 years of age.
