If I ever actually get to Africa again, I plan to get myself to the Great Zimbabwe ruins,
located near the townof Masvingo in central Zimbabwe. Built between the 13th and mid-15th centuries AD, the African Iron Age structures must be amazing to see in person. Great Zimbabwe was the largest of about 250 similar stone structures, and clearly involved in trade with sites on the Swahili coast such as Kilwa Kisiwani.
One of the fascinating things about Great Zimbabwe are its soapstone birds. At least eight detailed carvings of various birds atop soapstone pillars were discovered at the site. They were stolen from the site by European visitors and repatriated to Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) in the 1980s. These and more reasons make Great Zimbabwe our Site of the Day, so pick a link below and click on through.
