The archaeological site of Kerkenes is thought to be Pteria,
a capital city of the Median Empire mentioned by the Greek historian Herodotus. Founded about 600 BC by people of Phyrigian stock, the city was captured in 547 BC by the last Lydian king, Croesus, before Croesus lost everything to the Achaemenids led by Cyrus the Great.
Years of excavations at Kerkenes have recovered an array of interesting artifacts, making Kerkenes our Site of the Day.
