Our Geology guide, Andrew Alden, brings the online petition ScienceDebate 2008 to our attention today. Spearheaded by congressmen Vern Ehlers, R-MI, and Rush Holt, D-NJ, ScienceDebate 2008 already has the support of numerous influential scientists and writers. The petition asks that there be a presidential debate on science and technology, one that is sorely needed.
Count me among the petitioners, and here's a few of the archaeology-based bloggers who have signed on as well.

Krys… Thanks for coming by that other archeological dig known as the Mideast. How’s this for a 2008 wish: a year without assassinations. But that’s like wishing for a debate on science in a presidential election year. Virtually impossible when half the bunch are would-be Grand Inquisitors and the other half are fact-molesters.
Yesterday’s news about Benazir Bhutto and her supporters was dreadful. If there’s anything archaeology teaches us its that — we don’t learn anything from the past.
