In a move that might have something to do with the release of the upcoming movie, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, this week actor Harrison Ford joined the board of the AIA, which has 8,500 world wide members in 104 chapters, and reaches nearly a quarter million people through its publication Archaeology magazine. In a press release, Ford is quoted: "Knowledge is power, and understanding the past can only help us in dealing with the present and the future."
The AIA supports archaeological research and preservation on a worldwide scale, and does an admirable job of making the work of academics available to the rest of us, in the form of local lectures, archaeological travel and high quality publications. Jones', er, Ford's presence on the board will bring a higher profile to this terrific organization. Membership is open to anyone, whether professional, amateur or enthusiast; an AIA membership comes with a subscription to Archaeology magazine and the American Journal of Archaeology, and most new members don't even have to get slimed!
