The paths to a scientific career are as varied as the men and women who practice it.
Archaeological chemist Nikolaas van der Merwe (Professor of Natural History, University of Cape Town) traces the beginning of his career as a scientist to some time spent in his early twenties on board a cargo ship in the Atlantic Ocean.
On being a scientist is an adaptation of a talk he gave to the organized graduate student association at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. In it, Dr. van der Merwe describes what he thinks science should be; and he was kind enough to let me post it here for you all to read.
