There's something truly fascinating about the moai on Easter Island.

Monumental statues between 500 and 1,000 years old, carved out of hardened volcanic ash, and sometimes topped with a red hat, the moai evoke some mystery, even in the hardest head of a scientist. Rummaging around in Flickr, I found hundreds of photos, and decided to pick a few that put the statues into context—illustrating how they are part of the landscape.

I am new to the topic of archeology but was given a book from a friend called, Desert Days and I read it over the holidays. It was great. It was a story about a field archeologist and his career in the field. It was especially touching because this man was a permanently injured WWII vet and went on to become a Harvard PhD. I had no idea how difficult and dangerous field work can be. I would recommend it to anyone.
