Once upon a time, I had a quote of the week feature—hard to believe I could keep that up for any long-standing period, but I did for quite a while, and as a result I have over 200 entries now.
I'd like to add to it—in fact, I'd like to build a list of good quotes so we can do one a day for a year, and so I'm sending out a request to anyone of my readers that might have a good quote that talks about the past, that uses the past to illuminate the present, that describes field work in a painful or wonderful way, to add it here.
Here's the complete list and a way to get your daily fix for half a year or so:
- Archaeological Quotations
- Quote of the Day 1, 49 quotes
- Quote of the Day 2, 50 quotes
- Chris's Collection, 50 quotes from real, honest-to-god, working (at least once upon a time) archaeologists

George Santayana is one of my most favorite people to quote from.
“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
This could be said of how Archaeologists see a newly discovered structure.
” To knock a thing down, especially if it is cocked at an arrogant angle, is a deep delight of the blood.” Both by George Santayana

Kris, you mentioned a book … so I thought I’d drop in and let you know that this would be the perfect archy “stocking stuffer” [or other occasion]. I can think of 5 people right off the bat who would be getting one from me, if such a book existed.
