Cunliffe: Europe Between the Oceans

Europe between the Oceans: 9000 BC to AD 1000, is the latest overview of European archaeology produced by Barry Cunliffe. My favorite bookstore, Prairie Lights in Iowa City, Iowa, passed along an advance copy to me, but I have simply been unable to squeeze in the time to review it yet—although I have peered between its covers enough to recognize its breadth of coverage and recommend it at least twice now to readers looking for good overviews.

I just heard there were a couple of reasonable reviews out there to be found, to give us all a taste of the book, so I can continue to shirk my delectable duties for a while, anyway.

Thanks to faithful reader TM for bringing The Atlantic review to my attention—she was pointing out this quote from Schwarz's review: "When archaeology is done right, it's frequently dull; when it's fascinating, it's frequently wrong." Cunliffe's writing is always clear and on target, and the book looks comprehensive. Sounds like a winner.
