How Do You Choose a Field School?

By , About.com GuideApril 1, 2009

Follow me on:

A field school is an archaeological training class, run by universities and historical societies the world over. Many of them are a perfect testing ground for the person who is considering going into archaeology. But the choices are so broad, I'm told it's difficult to choose which would be the best experience.

So—have you been to a field school lately? I wrote an article called "How to Choose a Field School", designed for people exploring the idea of archaeology. But it has been, oh, longer than I care to say since I've been to a field school, and I figure my memory might be a little vague on the details. Today, I'm asking for some help.

If you've been to a field school and would like to share some tidbits of experience on what things to look for (or things to avoid), here's your chance to help enlighten others. You don't have to sign your real name, but you can if you want to.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the How to Choose a Field School, you'll find a widget called a Readers Respond box, in which you can tell us what things make a great field school. I'll moderate the responses, and they won't appear instantly (so we can avoid the spam problem), but otherwise I'm happy to let you say what you feel like saying. Give it a whirl!
