Perhaps rashly, I have embarked on a mission to pull together recent research on Viking (or Norse) archaeology. This mission will take several more weeks, but I do have some pieces that are ready for primetime, so I thought I'd share.
- Viking Timeline
- Viking Bibliography (still in progress as I work through the literature)
- Skraelings
- Hofstaðir (Iceland)
- The Eastern Settlement (Greenland)
- Garðar (Greenland)
- Ridanas (Sweden)
- Ribe (Denmark)
- Oseberg Ship Burial (Norway)
- Viking Silver Hoards
Look for more to appear over the next few weeks. Eventually there will be a coherent summary tying things up!

1014 – Vikings defeated at Clontarf by Brian Boru
Hey, Thanks!!! I’ll add it posthaste.
sorry Kris:
Newfoundland was indeed settled by the French – and the Portugese, for that matter; and the cove in question (l’anse aux Meadows)
is an anglicised form of
“L’anse aux méduses” Jellyfish Cove -
méduses being the French word ( and the Latin scientific name) for jellyfish.
-The ones in question are a revolting purple
colour from 20 – 30 cm wide with a mildly unpleasant sting.
Hah! Who knew? Much less pastoral description… Thanks very much…
