The 2010 field season for the University of North Dakota will be held in conjunction with the National Park Service, at the Elbee and Karishta sites, located within the Knife River Indian Villages Historic Site.

Most of the research will be conducted at Elbee, a multicomponent site located along the Knife River in Mercer County, North Dakota. Elbee has a prominent Plains Village occupation dated between AD 1520-1630; features are currently eroding out of the river bank. Earlier investigations at the site have recorded a circular earthlodge house foundation, cache pits and hearths.
UND plans a geophysical survey of the Elbee site prior to excavations. Salvage archaeology at Elbee, and excavations at Kanishta, will give students hands-on training and experience in traditional and geophysical research.
The field season lasts from May 24-July 2, 2010, and six academic credits will be offered from the UND. Excavations will be led by Dennis Toom, and the application deadline is April 16, 2010. Tuition costs, contact information and additional details are available at the UND field school website.
