Cold Earth is a new novel (well, new to the United States--it was published in the UK in 2009) about an archaeological expedition to the west coast of Greenland, which takes place during a world-wide flu epidemic.

Following in the literary tradition of Neville Shute's On the Beach, and We Who Are About To... by Joanna Russ, Cold Earth focuses on the personal histories and interpersonal relationships of people under extreme conditions of isolation and (possibly) impending doom.
But more than that, Cold Earth is a modern retelling of the failure of the Eastern Settlement, a Norse (Viking) colony whose inhabitants mysteriously disappeared in AD 1450. Cold Earth is tense, engrossing, and with totally recognizable characters, and I heartily recommend it for some chilly evening when you are nice and toasty safe inside.
