Aztec gods are known to us from the Spanish chronicles written by horrified and fascinated clergyman, such as Fray Diego Duran, and from Aztec codices, colorful bark paper books, only a few of which survive.

In this new feature Aztec Gods, contributing writer Nicoletta Maeschi has compiled for us stories of what she considers the most important Aztec gods, including Xipe Totec, "Our Lord with the Flayed Skin"; Tlaloc, the pan-Mesoamerican rain god; and Huitzilipochtli, "Hummingbird of the Left", among several others.
