Tianluoshan is a Hemudu culture site, located on the coast of Hangzhou Bay (today known best for its enormous modern bridge illustrated in the photograph). The ancient Chinese people who lived here some 7,000 years ago lived in long houses built on stilts and dined on marine resources from the bay. But they also experimented with growing rice in paddies, as archaeological evidence has recently shown.
