Aké is a Mayan archaeological site, located in the northern Yucatan peninsula, where one of the most decisive battles of the Spanish conquest was held in 1527.

But long before the Spanish arrived, Ake was a very old community, beginning in the Late Preclassic about 350 BC. The town was visited by Stephens and Catherwood, and you can still visit it today. Among the buildings worth visiting, says contributing writer Nicoletta Maestri, is the Palace, illustrated in the photo above.
