Oxkintok

One of the less well-known Maya sites to visit in the Yucatan peninsula is Oxkintok, a lovely quiet and yet quite dense group of buildings.

Man of Oxkintok

Among the many things to be seen at Oxkintok is the statue called the Man of Oxkintok, here photographed by David Hixson of Tulane University. Typical Puuc architecture using tablud and tablero techniques can be also be seen at the site; and while you are there, you shouldn't miss the so-called Labyrinth.

Oxtintok is in the process of being excavated and restored by the joint efforts of European archaeologists under the direction of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) in Mexico.

Me permito hacer la aclaración que Yucatan no es parte de Guatemala, Yucatan es un estado de México. Perteneció a Guatemala hace muchísimos años.

Right you are, both of you. Thanks for the correction…

These comments refer to my newsletter, in which I foolishly attributed Oxkintok to Guatemala, not, as Nicoletta rightly says, the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico.
