According to legend, archaeologist Mick Aston is reported to have boasted that given three days, he could assess any archaeological site. In 1994, the reality TV program Time Team was born, proving Aston's claim--or at least gathering evidence for it. If you're not familiar with the Time Team, the new DVD box set called "Time Team: Unearthing the Roman Invasion" is your opportunity.
Time Team: Unearthing the Roman Invasion. Athena Learning and Acorn Media
The Time Team is an extraordinarily popular television show that takes a bunch of experts to archaeological sites throughout the UK, using a variety of archaeological and historic techniques to at least preliminarily identify the cultural content and state of the remains.
American audiences without access to British TV have not seen the original Time Team programs - although the United States version debuted on PBS in 2009, and the second season will premiere in 2013. "Unearthing the Roman Invasion" includes 12 episodes from the nearly two decade run of the British version of Time Team, and I found it an entertaining and educational introduction to Romano-British archaeology. "Time Team: Unearthing the Roman Invasion" is being published in May by the educational video company Athena Learning (best known as an outlet for Bill Moyers videos).
