Comalcalco is a the name of a Classic period Maya site, located in the state of Tabasco, Mexico, about 20 miles in from the Gulf coast and about 40 miles from the town of Villahermosa. A photo essay/walking tour of the site is the latest contribution to About.com Archaeology from friend and Mayanist Nicoletta Maestri.

While Comalcalco is not the best known of Maya sites, its unique, well-preserved architecture is well worth the visit. Comalcalco is in part built by hand-made adobe bricks. Etched and modeled into the fired clay brick is a detailed depiction of Maya life, such as this drawing of a temple atop a platform mound.
Whether you plan a trip to Tabasco, or are just dreaming about a Gulf Coast vacation, Nicoletta's Walking Tour of Comalcalco will introduce you to its architecture and points of interest.
Thanks Nico!
