As the American east coast waits anxiously for Hurricane Sandy to make landfall, it may make you feel a tad bit better knowing that human society has survived much worse.

Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, hurricanes: all of these are part and parcel of living on the planet and always have been. How much the frequency and intensity of storms is affected by global climate change is still debated in scientific circles: but somehow we have always managed to pick up and go back to work. So far, anyway.
