It's a tradition here at Archaeology on About.com to post a solstice image from Stonehenge, taken by Matt Cardy or his colleagues, and of course today can be no different.

This year, the solstice coincided with the joyous end of a cycle--in this case the end of the ancient Maya calendar Baktun 13, and the beginning of Baktun 14. That explains the joy on this man's face: the world has not ended, despite rumors to the contrary.
