The chinampa farming system is a method of raised field agriculture, used in the American continents for at least a thousand years.

Chinampas involve the reclamation of wetlands, by creating long narrow patches of ground bordered by canals on both sides. The earth is built up during excavating the canals, by way of stacking alternate layers of canal muck and rotting vegetation.
